Celebrating vvast’s B Corp Certification: A Milestone in Our Sustainability and Ethics  Journey

At vvast, we are thrilled to announce that we have achieved B Corp certification, a prestigious recognition that underscores our commitment to the future of our planet and people. This milestone is a testament to our dedication to building a sustainable future and creating a positive impact for our employees, communities, and the planet, in the spirit of our core D4C mindset.

What is B Corp Certification?

For those not yet aware, B Corp certification is awarded by B Lab, a global nonprofit organisation that certifies companies meeting rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Becoming a B Corp means that vvast is part of a global community of businesses that are not only competing to be the best in the world; but also, to be the best for the world.

Our Journey to Certification

Achieving B Corp certification was a rigorous process that involved a comprehensive assessment of our operations, policies, and practices.

The B-labs framework sent us on us on a mission of a form of self-discovery as we truly backed the concept of being purpose led and delivering against our mission statement.

This will manifest in our service led business by way of our playbook, however where we gained a good few points was around our strategy to ‘codify’ our purpose led mission by way of our SaaS App and theme strategy.

In effect, democratising our purpose led ecommerce knowledge for maximum global impact by way of SaaS.

 We underwent a thorough evaluation of our impact on workers, customers, community, and the environment. Here are some highlights of our sustainability and ethics initiatives that contributed to our certification, aligned with our three core BCorp pillars:

Sustainability in Retail

At vvast, sustainability is at the core of our recommended retail strategy as we go forward. We strive to minimise our environmental footprint by implementing innovative solutions to reduce waste, conserve resources, and going forward promote circular economy principles.

Our efforts include:

  • Supporting Brand Equity: We align our efforts with our partner brands to enhance reputation and loyalty through meaningful brand building which sustainability initiatives form a part of.
  • Addressing Climate Change: We are committed to reducing carbon emissions, mitigating environmental impact, and building resilience against climate-related risks.
  • Resource Management: We optimise resource use, minimise waste, and maximise efficiency across our supply chain.
  • Pollution Reduction: We implement innovative solutions to reduce pollution and safeguard ecosystem health.
  • Circular Economy: We promote product life cycle extension, repair, reuse, and circular business models.

The Role of Data

Data-driven insights are invaluable in driving sustainable decision-making. By harnessing the power of data analytics, we are able to identify areas for improvement, track progress, and make informed choices that drive positive environmental outcomes.

Our initiatives include:

  • Utilising Data: We leverage data analytics to enhance customer awareness and support sustainable decision-making. For example our core platform vvastBI has mark down vs full price as a key metric. The more full price product we sell for our brands the better it is for their brand, bottom line but crucially it’s less likely to end up in landfill.
  • Monitoring Carbon Emissions: Transparent and surgical grade carbon reporting and emission reduction strategies are integral to our sustainability efforts. Our latest version of vvastify 2.0 (our Shopify theme and App ecosystem) has a significant carbon reduction. We monitor and are proactively encouraging our brands to reduce downstream freight emissions and strive to achieve science-based targets.
  • Materiality Assessment: Through comprehensive materiality assessments, we identify and prioritise sustainability issues, measure progress, and drive continuous improvement.

Ethical Advertising

Our commitment to ethical advertising ensures that we uphold the highest standards of integrity and transparency in our marketing practices. We believe in promoting products and services that align with our values and contribute to a sustainable future.

Our focus includes:

  • Enhancing Customer Awareness: Empowering customers to make informed, sustainable choices is paramount. Our plan is to further provide transparent information and offer tools that enable sustainable decision-making.
  • Governance and Best Practice: We uphold the highest standards of corporate governance and implement best practices across our operations not only with our BCorp but also with our ISO 27001 and 14001 certifications.
  • Legislation Compliance: We proactively ensure compliance with relevant regulations, stay ahead of legislative developments, and advocate for policies that promote sustainability.

B Corp Materiality Assessment

As part of our B Corp application, vvast engaged with a wide range of stakeholders through our materiality assessment to determine our key sustainability issues. Our mission and impact have always gone beyond pure play ecommerce. With an ethos of relentless R&D at our core, we are constantly exploring a fresh approach to good business growth.

Our materiality assessment, conducted in 2023 with an independent third party, highlighted key issues such as driving brand equity to deliver sustainability, addressing climate change, and ensuring the mental wellbeing of employees and suppliers.
