Purpose by Design – How vvastify 2.0 is Improving Sustainability for Leading Ecommerce Brands
At vvast, we believe that sustainable progress in the retail sector comes from real-world impact, not just carbon offsetting. The latter often feels like a checkbox exercise—an easy way to soothe our consciences without addressing the root causes of emissions. But the truth is, meaningful change requires us to go beyond compensating for our carbon footprint. It demands that we reduce it at the source.
Real Impact Through Innovation – enter vvastify
Take our recent work with Deus as an example. Leveraging our vvastify 2.0 platform on Shopify we reduced the page weight of their website, we’ve managed to cut down approximately 2.6 metric tons of carbon emissions per year—a reduction of over 72%. This is the equivalent of charging 170,000 smartphones or growing 43 tree seedlings for a decade. While this may seem like a small step in the grand scheme of things, it represents a significant victory in a sector where Scope 3 emissions (indirect emissions from supply chains and business operations) can account for up to 80% of a business’s carbon footprint.
This achievement is not about ticking off a box or purchasing offsets to make us feel better. It’s about implementing tangible, real-world changes that contribute directly to lowering emissions, by doing this within our platform and playbook we can then simply and effectively replicate that across our brands. Deus is just one example, we have the likes of YETI, Stance and Jansport (VF) also on our vvastify 2.0 platform who will also be seeing significant carbon reduction as a result. By scaling these efforts, we believe that we can make a substantial impact which is where our SaaS strategy comes in. Our plan is to deploy this tech globally and crucially affordability so it’s adopted at scale.
Why offsetting is not enough
Offsetting has often been promoted as a convenient way to “neutralise” emissions, but it’s increasingly clear that this approach is more about optics than actual environmental benefit. As this article highlights, offsetting can obscure the real issue: that we need to drastically reduce the emissions we produce in the first place.
At vvast, we’re taking the harder road, one that involves relentless R&D , one of our core values and the commitment to real, measurable change. Every job within our company is a climate job because every action we take can contribute to a more sustainable future. Our developers, for instance, have been instrumental in driving this change by making our digital platforms more efficient, reducing the emissions associated with every transaction.
The power of small steps
It’s easy to underestimate the impact of small steps, but in a world where every fraction of a percentage counts, these steps are monumental. By focusing on reducing emissions at the source, rather than merely offsetting them, we are addressing the most challenging aspects of corporate sustainability—those buried deep within Scope 3 emissions.
This is just the beginning. Our journey toward sustainability is ongoing with our Bcorp objectives and mission setting the course, as we continue to innovate, we’ll keep sharing our insights and successes. Together with our partners, like Deus, we’re proving that even small steps can lead to giant leaps for mankind—and for our planet.
